The syllabus and course is structured into four sections:

• Asbestos Fibres

Formative Practical Assessment

The formative practical assessment is a carried out by the training provider during the course. It enables candidates to demonstrate their ability to

• Work safely at a fume cupboard whilst using a stereo microscope to examine samples
• Correctly prepare slides for examination under a polarising microscope
• Set up a polarising microscope to allow identification of asbestos types within a sample

Written Theory Examination

This is a closed-book examination comprising 20 short-answer questions to be answered in one hour. The examination covers sections 1 to 3 of the syllabus in proportion to the time allocation given on the front page of the syllabus. The examination is overseen by a BOHS invigilator.

Written Practical Examination

This is an open-book practical examination which requires candidates to identify the asbestos types in six samples. The samples are from the AIMs scheme, provided to BOHS by HSL.

BOHS P405 – Management of Asbestos in Buildings (Including Asbestos Removal)P405 – Management of Asbestos in Buildings (including Asbestos Removal) is the industry-standard qualification for those whose work involves asbestos management, such as duty holders, building managers, responsible persons, and those who look after asbestos management data. It provides the background knowledge required to manage identified asbestos in buildings and ensures that appropriate management processes are followed and documented properly. It also gives you the knowledge to make better procurement decisions, and to monitor the quality of the services provided by other asbestos professionals through understanding the standards and procedures that you should be following. The P405 management of asbestos qualification conforms with the training requirements outlined in CAR 2012, Regulation 4 and L143 – Managing and working with asbestos Approved Code of Practice.

Who is it for?

The qualification is suitable for duty holders, or anyone who assists them in the discharge of their responsibilities. It is also suitable for anyone who: Manages asbestos in buildings Procures asbestos-related services Wishes to progress into asbestos management from asbestos surveying or analysis Level The level of a qualification indicates the relative complexity and depth of knowledge and skills required to attain the qualification. This is a level 4 qualification in the BOHS qualifications framework, equivalent to NVQ Level 4 and HNC.

How is it delivered?

The P405 course will normally run over four consecutive days and include 28 hours of teaching followed by examinations on the fifth day. The course can be delivered more flexibly, such as on one day per week for four weeks, but should still include 28 hours of teaching. In addition to the teaching time, you will be expected to undertake at least 4 hours of independent study in your own time.

Modules / Learning objectives

To provide you with a good understanding of asbestos surveying, removal, assessment and analytical services and provide the necessary background knowledge to procure, monitor and audit the quality of these services. The course will also provide knowledge of the legal requirements of the management of asbestos in buildings. On completion of the P405, the candidate will be able to demonstrate the correct method for:

• Understand the legal framework and how it applies

• Understand the different survey types and their requirements

• Develop an action plan and properly manage asbestos

• Identify appropriate asbestos remediation procedures

• Understand the air monitoring required following asbestos remediation

You must pass three parts within 12 months:

a. Written Practical examination

b. Written Examination 1c. Written Examination 2

Candidates who pass all the parts (A, B and C) within 12 months will be awarded

Course Overview

The course covers the ill-health effects which can arise from exposure to air-borne asbestos fibres. The course also aims to provide delegates with an understanding and appreciation of the legal and practical requirements and so help to protect themselves, their employees and visitors from the risks associated with asbestos on premises including the duty to manage as prescribed by regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.This course is designed to meet and exceed the requirements for asbestos awareness training as specified within regulation 10 of the regulations it also fully addresses the asbestos awareness syllabus as specified by the United Kingdom Asbestos Training Association (UKATA).

Certification

Delegates are awarded a UKATA Certificate after successful completion of the course.

Description:

Note: This course is the UKATA Non Licensed refresher training. Delegates must hold a valid UKATA Non Licensed certificate within the last 12 months to qualify for refresher training. The expected duration for the refresher training will be determined by the training provider carrying out a training needs analysis and should be no less than 3 hours of tutor time. CAR 2012 states that “any employee who may be exposed, or is liable to be exposed to asbestos (or supervises those who are) while conducting their normal duties, must be trained and employers must provide adequate information, instruction and training to those employees”. The Health and Safety Executive advise that training for non-licensed and/or notifiable non-licensed work should be job specific and Santia’s experience in this area enables courses to meet this advice.

Who should attend?

Delegates who knowingly work with asbestos containing materials where that work is classified as non-licensed or notifiable non-licensed works, as defined by CAR 2012. Delegates wishing to complete this training should already have a valid UKATA approved asbestos awareness certificate awarded within the past 6 months.

Course contents:

• Differences between Non-Licensed Work and Notifiable Non-Licensed Work (NNLW) and the exemptions from requirements of CAR 2012 in respect of these works
• The stages in the work processes for undertaking non-licensed work with ACMs from site set up to final cleaning and inspection
• Fibre suppression techniques including use of Class H vacuum cleaners and wet spraying, wet wiping and use of Tak-rags
• The safe use of PPE and RPE
• Detailed work methods and practical for the selected tasks
• The requirements for the safe disposal of asbestos waste
